Esej (z francouzského slova essai – pokus, zkouška) je základní slohový útvar, který se pohybuje na rozhraní publicistiky, literatury a odborného stylu. Každý student, který se chystá na vysokou školu nebo přemýšlí o tom, že bude dělat mezinárodní anglickou zkoušku, jako například FCE nebo CAE, ho musí umět vystřihnout levou zadní.
Structure
The picture on the right shows an outline which is suitable for an FCE or CAE essay. Every good essay has the following parts, which are nicely linked together and the ideas flow from one part to 
another:
- Introduction: Start from a general idea and move towards the ideas you are to discuss in the body
- Body – discuss one idea per paragraph
- Pragraph 1
- Pragraph 2
- Paragraph 3 etc.
- Conclusion: Summarize the most important ideas from all the pargraphs and say what it means in broader context
Language
The register (i.e. the language you use) must be strictly formal.
- NO contractions
- NO fragments
- NO exclamation marks
- NO colloquial or even slang language
- USE formal vocabulary
- USE adverbs and adverbial expressions to organize your ideas
